Word stars holds Key stage 2 (years 3-6/age 7-11) after school clubs in primary schools in South East London, as well as group and one to one private tutoring. We believe that every child has a writer within them. We work within the schools, and all we need is the use of a classroom, we provide all the necessary materials. For a copy of our proposal to work within your school, or the school your child attends, please do get in touch. All tutors have a full enhanced DBS check, all the relevant safeguarding training, and are qualified at degree level, or studying at degree level in a relevant subject.
Children are taught a wide range of topics, from debating, to writing sonnets, to learning how to set the scene with descriptive writing. Some of the more popular sessions, such as bookmaking, freewriting, story prompts and creating their own lesson plans will be repeated a couple of times a year. Other than that, your child could sign up from years 3-6, and always be studying and enjoying something new, as it is not a repeated set of sessions each term. Our classes are mixed ages, and sessions are appropriate for all age groups, and abilities. I have lots of experience
working with children with learning difficulties, autism, and other unique needs.
Being aware of individuality is important at word stars, nurturing students based on their strengths and weaknesses. The main aim of our sessions, is to have fun with writing, to equip our students with various skills, and encourage them to create, and express themselves.
My name is Marie. I am a mother to a wonderful 8 year old daughter, and we live with our little cat. I have a BA degree in English Literature with American studies with honours. I have taught after school creative writing clubs, in private and public schools, since 2019. I am also experienced in tutoring private students in English. After a few years of teaching and management experience in after school clubs, I set up Word stars in January 2022. All lesson plans are original and written by me. Much of these tie into the national curriculum, but I also introduce more complex topics, in a simplified way. As an after school club, the primary aim is to develop a love of writing within children, and make that fun! I have found Marie approachable and well liked by my son. When she started the teaching sessions, Marie and I discussed my sons strengths and weaknesses, and set some goals for the teaching sessions. She has an excellent structured approach to her teaching skills. She is able to make the sessions enjoyable yet highly educational and developmental. She has been able to gauge the progress of my son very precisely and modify the sessions accordingly. She is very kind, mild mannered and has great attention to detail. I have seen the excellent progress in my son with her teaching skills. Marie's after school club sessions, as well as her private zoom meetings, have really helped my sons work to come alive! not long after starting with her I could see a real difference in his homework. Marie is a really kind and gentle teacher with so much patience, that it really has been wonderful for my son who is autistic. her lesson plans are exciting and engaging and my son is so excited for her classes each week, despite usually being a reluctant learner. The thing I like about creative writing is round robin writing, where we pass the story on to another person. Creative writing is the best. There's no doubt why you shouldn't sign up. Here are 3 words to describe it, fun, entertaining amazing. The others are right she does run a tight ship. I never knew it would be so fun! I loved the tombola book review lesson, she gave out bear fruit rolls and mochis! She nearly always does!
